Exercises To Calm Your Anxious Thoughts
Calm Anx
When anxious thoughts begin to take over, one of the simplest ways to create a sense of calm is to focus on your breathing. Take a slow breath in through your nose, allowing your belly to expand, and then gently exhale through your mouth. Try making your exhale a little longer than your inhale. As you breathe, bring your attention away from the thoughts racing through your mind and back to the physical sensation of breathing. You can also add counting to help interrupt anxious thought patterns. Count slowly backward from 100, giving yourself something simple and steady to focus on. If your mind wanders, simply begin again without judging yourself.
Another helpful exercise is to get your body moving. Taking a walk, even for just 10 or 15 minutes, can give anxious energy somewhere to go. Leave your phone behind if possible and pay attention to what is around you—the feeling of your feet touching the ground, the movement of your body, the sounds you hear, and the rhythm of your breathing. Walking allows you to step away from whatever situation or thoughts may be overwhelming you and gives your mind a change of scenery. Sometimes, creating physical distance from your worries can help you see them with a little more perspective.
Spending time outside can also be a powerful way to settle an anxious mind. Sit in the sunshine, stand beneath a tree, listen to the birds, or simply notice the sky and the world around you. Give yourself permission to be present without needing to solve every problem at that moment. Combine being outdoors with slow breathing or counting backward and allow yourself to relax into the experience. Anxiety often asks us to live in the future, imagining what might happen; these simple exercises gently bring us back to where we are right now. You don’t have to make every anxious thought disappear—you can simply learn to create a little more space around it and remind yourself that you are safe in this moment. You got this!
